My Mother’s Kitchen: Chocolate Upside-Down Cake Dessert Recipe

We didn’t always know where mom found the recipes that became our favorites, but as the name of this one implies, it probably came from a “True Story” magazine, even though I don’t remember seeing True Story magazines in our home. Maybe she read the magazine while having her hair permed, or while sitting in a doctor’s waiting room. Wherever she happened upon it, I’m glad she did, as this delicious dessert “truly” became a family favourite. Try it for yourself and see if you agree.

True Story Chocolate Upside-Down Cake

1 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. shortening
½ cup milk
½ cup white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. Salt
Nuts (optional)

Directions
Sift flour, baking powder, salt & sugar. Work shortening in until finely crumbled. Add milk & vanilla. Mix well. Pour in greased shallow round pan (or 8” x 8” square pan). Then combine:
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup cocoa
Sprinkle over batter. Pour over this 1 cup boiling water (1 ½ or 2 cups makes more sauce).
Bake in moderate oven (350° F) for 45 minutes. Cool. Cut in wedges. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
